It is safe to say that 2020 has not been the typical summer. Although many of us have had to put our vacations on hold, it is still important to take time off and unplug from the work week with a good book or a quality podcast. At Boston Digital marketing is not only our business it is our passion, so it’s no surprise we keep up with marketing and tech content in our spare time. We have compiled a list of our favorite podcasts & books on marketing, business, and tech. We hope that these selections will provide you with inspiration, information, or simply just entertainment:
If you like studying human behavior check out Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger. As marketers we may think we have everything figured out, however there is still always some mystery as to why certain things catch on or go viral. In Contagious, Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger lays out six basic criteria that define whether or not someone will discuss content or recommend a product.
If you are a content guru check out Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content by Ann Handley. Many of us have been in the position of having to create a tremendous amount of copy, even if we are not copywriters. In Ann Handley’s book she gets us to accept that we are all writers and provides helpful and easy tips to craft effective content. This is great for amateur content writers or content team leads who are struggling to get your technical or design experts to contribute copy and embrace their inner writer.
If you’re a fan of true crime check out Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou. Bad Blood is the story of the rise and fall of Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes. Part true-crime corporate fraud investigation, part cautionary tale about the extremes of business culture, part ethics debate, Bad Blood is a highly entertaining read for anyone interested in business or tech.
If you’re fascinated by the internet, tune in to Reply All. The Guardian said Reply All is “‘a podcast about the Internet’ that is actually an unfailingly original exploration of modern life and how to survive it.” The podcast covers everything Internet related, answering important questions like ‘what makes a famous dog? or, ‘how do bounty hunters use the internet?’.
If you want to keep up with the latest and greatest in marketing check out The Modern Marketing Engine. This is a podcast for marketers who want to hear from their peers in the trenches and the occasional analyst or rock-star-influencer. Recent episode topics include “4 Strategies to Drive Marketing Results with Limited Resources” and “Managing A Remote Marketing Team as The New Normal.”
If you're too busy to listen to a podcast check out Marketing School to get daily marketing insights, tips, techniques, and relevant anecdotes that are helpful for even the most seasoned marketers. Episodes tend to be around five minutes long and include topics like “How to Leverage Long-Tail Keywords”, “Is Affiliate Marketing Dead?” and “How to Do a Daily Marketing Standup.”
If you’re a fan of branded podcasts check out The Growth Show from Hubspot, which explores the inspiring stories behind how people grow a business, an idea, or a movement. Branded podcasts are a great way for companies to share their content and brand with the world and for podcast listeners to get quality ad free podcasts.
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit check out How I Built This, an NPR podcast that dives into the stories behind some of the world's best-known companies. Recent episodes feature founders of companies including Peloton, Eventbrite and Tempur-Pedic.
